Västra Götaland » Gothenburg Museum of Art
The Gothenburg Museum of Art houses collections from the 15th century to today. The museum has a Nordic emphasis but the collections also contain older Dutch and French art, including important works by Rembrandt, van Gogh, Monet and Picasso, to name a few. The Gothenburg Museum of Art have one of the leading collections of Nordic art from the turn of the previous century. On the top floor visitors find the Fürstenberg Gallery, originally a private collection which was later donated to the museum. The gallery is installed in a setting typical of its period, and here visitors find paintings by such Nordic artists as Ernst Josephson, Carl Larsson, P. S Krøyer and Anders Zorn. The contemporary galleries contain art from 1945 onwards. Unlike other major national art museums, The Gothenburg Museum of Art does not have its origins in royal or princely collections. It is the people of Gothenburg themselves who have created the museum through donations of works and resources.
