We are eager to share the delights of Tyresö with you. To reach Tyresö Castle and Park we take bus number 875 from the Gullmarsplan subway station in Stockholm. The journey takes 20 minutes and the bus stops at the final station, Tyresö Church. By car we follow Nynäsvägen south from Stockholm to Nynashamn; turn off toward Tyresö on route 229, then follow the signs to Tyresö Slott (Castle).

This is the cradle of Tyresö, and with a visit to Tyresö Church we are now straight into the 17th century. A beautiful votive ship model was hung in the church at its inauguration, in 1641. Sweden's oldest full rigged ship model, the pride of Tyresö, it now resides in an illuminated display case. The church is one of Sweden's most sought-after for weddings.

In nearby Little Tyresö is a youth hostel for those of us who respond to the call of the wild. Here we sleep well with only birdsong to disturb us. We have a choice of inn or hostel standard. The tourist office is also located here, in one of the historic houses on the estate

   

In the vast castle grounds, Tyresö Castle itself is the high point in its beautiful setting by Kalvfjärden bay. The owner, Nordiska Museum, looks after exhibits of the apartment once occupied by the last private owner, the Marquis Claes Lagergren, and still intact. But it is the park, including the charming islet Notholmen, that remains the main attraction, and the venue for a number of annual events appealing to both children and adults. Notholmen cafe serves simple lunches – perhaps after a refreshing dip in the bay – while leisure craft tie up at the guest pier, especially at Midsummer when there is a big party throughout the park with games and dancing beneath the castle. There are also a variety of businesses and services in the park: anything from body care to the castle restaurant to a garden centre.
