Monks built a monastery on this location in the 13th century. In 1537, during the Reformation, the monastery was closed down by the Danish Crown. The noblemen Henrik Ramel and his son Henrik Ramel Junior changed Bäckaskog to its present appearance during the years 1584-1653.
