Kåbdalis – the hidden pearl of the north The mountain of Kåbdalis is located in Lapland, just south of Jokkmokk. This town has 60 inhabitants, but accommodation for 500 tourists. The ski business was started already in the 1960’s by the Gunnarstedt family, and they are still in charge. A couple of years ago it was decided to create construction sites at the foot of the mountain with a plan for a chairlift going to this area. A couple of weeks after this decision was made, Mr Steinar Alvaer was visiting, looked up towards the forest clad areas and said: – Great! Sites for sale. I’ll take them all! |

Continued construction - I promise, we have the best cabins of the mountain. They cost SEK three millions to build, each apartment has its own sauna and a total of eight beds, Steinar Alvaer continues. Apart from the cabins and the chair lift, we now have two new slopes and a fine off-piste area. - It has to be fun to ski in Kåbdalis and restrictive signs are few and far between. We instead encourage ski jumping and forest skiing by using snow canons for the touchdown and other exposed areas, Johan Gunnarstedt, one of the owners, tells us. Kåbdalis also have a jump area and 9 very exact pisted runs. As there are no plus degrees until March the slopes won’t turn icy. Plans for another site is under way, and 75 will be ready by spring. It remains to be seen whether this will be areas with cabins or for self-build housing. – Many have been interested in the possibility of buying a site, so we have yet to decide what to do. But what we have decided is that we need to build a hotel, Steinar Alvaer explains. Today there is a very popular restaurant in the area. The kitchen has a charcoal grill where meat and game is cooked to perfection. In this cosy environment amongst century old timber and wooden walls the après ski people and others are having a ball tasting the wines of the evening. |
